As a family who suffers from severe cat allergies and asthma, we are happy to report that we have never experienced any terrible allergy symptoms since owning this breed!

My experience with owning and caring for the Siberian breed has been life-changing. It has been a joy to bless so many other families who suffer from cat allergies with the same positive experience.

Siberian Cats and Allergies

For almost 95% of people with severe allergies to cats, the Siberian breed has the lowest levels of FEL-D1. This protein is produced by cats through their saliva, and it spreads through their fur when they clean themselves. FEL-D1 is the main cause of allergies in people who are allergic to cats.

If you suspect you are allergic to cats, we recommend starting with a fur sample.

Fur Sample Testing

We can send you a fur sample with instructions on how to use it. The cost is $5, and once payment is received, please allow 1-7 days for us to send it out:

Testing Instructions

Testing is most accurate when fur from both the mom and dad of the kitten is used, as Siberian allergen levels can vary greatly. During late pregnancy and nursing, allergen levels in fur may rise.

It is possible to get incorrect reactions when testing kittens' fur, as some people may react to kittens but not adult Siberians. Kittens nursing can trigger milk and albumin allergies, and dust from the litter box can also cause issues, especially when kittens play in it.

We will send fur samples in a zip-lock bag with instructions. It’s best to test the sample 1-3 times each day, gently washing your face between each trial or testing on different days. This will help determine if you might experience any allergic reactions.

Important Disclaimer

Feline allergens can cause serious or fatal reactions. The information provided here is not intended to replace medical advice. Before testing fur, visiting a cattery, or purchasing a Siberian, we strongly recommend discussing your allergies with your doctor.

Precautions:

  • Test in a room that is easy to clean.
  • Do not bring fur into your bedroom, as it persists as an allergen.
  • Always consult your doctor before testing fur.
  • Keep medications on hand, as prednisone and antihistamines may mask reactions.

Saliva Testing (Optional)

We also offer FEL-D1 saliva testing, which is optional and at an additional cost. For those with extreme cat allergies, we recommend testing the fur first. If you experience reactions, then it may be best to proceed with the saliva test to ensure the kitten produces the lowest level of FEL-D1 for you.

Saliva Testing Details:

  • This test is available once your kitten reaches 12-14 weeks old.
  • The cost of each test is $525 per kitten and is performed by our lab
  • Please note that while our previous kitten tests have shown very low allergen levels, we cannot guarantee any specific level, as each kitten will produce a different amount.
  • If your kitten produces levels that are too high, you will need to retest with a different kitten.

We are one of the very few catteries in the United States that offers saliva lab allergy testing on kittens.
